In May, the number of Chinese visitors surged 26.3% year-on-year to 110,148, despite the total number of travelers visiting the US only increasing slightly at 1% to 5.26 million, according to the state-run China News Agency.
In the first five months this year, the number of Chinese travelers visiting the US also increased the fastest compared to other nations, exceeding 520,000, according to a report issued from the US Office of Travel and Tourism Industries published on Thursday.
The report showed China ranking eighth among the ten countries that have the highest number of visitors.
The top 2 are still Canada and Mexico, but China is the only country where its visitor growth exceeded 20%. The figures from Britain, Canada and Mexico, which used to be the three main sources of visitors to the US, decreased by 3%.
The surge is mainly contributed by a new policy under the president Obama, who signed an executive order to increase the capacity for issuing visas to China and Brazil by 40% this year. Chinese tourists are expected to contribute to the US tourism industry and economic recovery, according to China News Service.
