Lantern Festivals around China


Lantern Festival falls on February 14 this year. In ancient times, it was the only day that girls were allowed to leave their home to see the outside world, and even go out on a date with their "Mr. Right". This year the Chinese festival coincides with Valentine's Day, making it an extra special day for dating. Here are some of the top lantern shows around China.

1. Qinhuai Lantern Festival

Qinhuai Lantern Festival has a long history spanning more than 1,000 years. The modern style of the festival began in 1985, and it is in its 28th year. As a folk cultural event in the Nanjing area, the festival is held from Spring Festival to Lantern Festival every year

2. Yu Garden Lantern Festival

As one of China's intangible cultural heritages, the Yu Garden Lantern Festival in Shanghai has been held for 20 years. It focuses on the combination of traditions and modern techniques. It is with this feature that it has gained great popularity among both young and old people alike

3. Zigong Lantern Festival

Also one of China's intangible cultural heritages, Zigong Lantern Festival features traditions from the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). Experts have called the innovation of design and techniques of lanterns "fine arts." The festival is famous for the number of lantern groups and lanterns made with special techniques.

4. Shengjing Lantern Fair

Shengjing Lantern Fair in Shenyang, Liaoning province first started during the late Qing Dynasty (AD 1644-1911). This year more than 20,000 lanterns are featured at the fair, and all of them were made by hand using traditional methods

5. Xi'an Lantern Festival

The Xi'an Lantern Festival is held in Tang Paradise, a large theme park featuring imperial architecture and historical setting from the Tang Dynasty in Xi'an, Shaanxi province. This year's festival theme is "China Dream and Silk Road," and features more than 70 groups of lanterns on display

6. Baotu Spring lantern show

The Baotu Spring lantern show could go as far back as the Tang Dynasty. However, the first Baotu Spring modern lantern show was held in 1965 in Jinan, Shandong province. The 35th Baotu Spring lantern show kicked off on January 26, 2014.
